Our Most Burgundian Burgundian
I don’t know why I say this but for some reason,
I think that it’s true. Girard is just so classic Burgundy.
He works his land. In warmer vintages, the wines are
fruitier. In less warm vintages, they are less fruity.
Different terroir tastes … different. He is incredibly
consistent quality-wise from year to year. Oh, and he
doesn’t really run around marketing himself. So his
prices are incredibly fair. He really is a treasure.
Some of my most experienced and wealthy customers buy tons of Girard because the wines are simply so classic.
From Father to Son
Now that Jean-Jacques Girard is retired and enjoying his time off his son, Vincent is burning the estate to new heights. They have acquired so much new terroir it’s almost impossible to keep track. Puligny Referts, Pommard Chapponieres, Volnay Chevrets and more!
But don’t forget the estate of JJ Girard’s trademark is Burgundy 1er Crus under $50 and many under $40 that are untouchable in the landscape of Burgundy. You cannot find these terroirs executed this well for this price anywhere that is not Fass Selections. Girard wines at their best have lacey, accessible and succulent fruit and an ethereal mouthfeel with structure to ensure medium to long term aging. Girard Burgundies are my go to for when I’ve had long day as I know the wines will be spectacular. They are so consistent and also the the kings of short term aging, even though they can age much longer. 5-8 years for some of the lower end 1er Crus like Savigny Peuillets or Savigny Serpentieres turn these wines into magic.
2022 at Girard
The 2022s at Girard are another strong performance and is one of the best vintages I have ever tasted. Some wines were more open that others out of barrel but one thing is they all has spectacularly expressive fruit, sapidity, terroir transparency and terrific structure, acidity and freshness. I adored the wines and am very excited to start offering them.
The Wines
Up first is the 2022 JJ Girard Beaune 1er Cru “Clos du Roi.” It can be had for as little as $37.99 on a 4-pack and I am thrilled that there were still a few cases left. It’s name refers to King Louis XI who appropriated this vineyard upon the death of Charles the Bold, the last Duke of Burgundy. Clos du Roi is one of my favorite Beaune sites and usually in the $50-$90 range. It ages wonderfully and always is a very rich earthy wine. The Clos du Roi is located in the Northern section of Beaune where the wines tend to be a bit more open and accessible. But still having the structure to age gracefully like any other Beaune 1er Cru from a vintage as great as 2022.
Gorgeous nose of crushed berries. Red fruited with a hint of black. Super floral. Loads of earth and minerals. Lovely, outrageous penetrating spice and underbrush. So sinewy. A perfume develops after an hour. Glorious spice after air. Cinnamon, cardamom, clove, nutmeg. Wow. Terrific vintage for this wine. Deep cherries. Mid season, black and sour. A real melange. Amazing clarity and shape to the nose. So dazzling in its vividness and compactness. Amazing minerality. Just so pointed and refined. A sense of refinement you don’t see often in Girard wines or this Cru.
Palate is so juicy with a classic earthy sweetness and loads of red berry fruit and some mid season cherry. Awesome texture and juiciness. Black cherry, such purity, balance and compactness. Ripe and deep tannins and just perfect fruit. Like perfect ripeness and backed up by great energy and minerality. This is very impressive. There is great sap and such vivid black cherry fruit. Will age for a decade at least. So long. Compact. Masterful. Sweet fruit and tannins. Sour cherries on the finish. Complex. Velvety tannins and such purity and grace. So, so complex and mineral. Amazing mouthfeel and such energy and precision. Wonderful depth and incredible balance. Special. Pure and sappy and so straight. Very complex and stoney finish. Balanced and poised. Years to go but a lovely drop today after 3 hour decant or so. Sweet fruited finish. So long. Really just utterly delicious. This has 10-15 years ahead of it. One of the best values I sell and I strongly recommend this is best after 5 years. No vintage exceptions. Having said that it will drink well young with a decant. Definitely a 4 pack purchase so that you can try one now and let the rest age. This will be allocated and is very limited but hopefully I can accommodate everyone.
The 2021 got a 91 from BH which is very high for him and the review is below. 22 is lusher than the 21 but still has that 21 energy even though it’s 22. People will be surprised how fresh and energetic the 22s are.
“A slightly riper nose reflects notes of cool earth, red and dark cherry and a floral top note. The energetic and precise middleweight flavors are not especially dense but do offers a lovely texture on the inviting, succulent and lingering finale. It’s relatively rare for a Clos du Roi to compete favorably with a good Lavières but this example does just that. Worth considering and this is a wine that should be approachable young if desired. 91/2027+” – 91 Points Burghound (2021)
Next up is the 2022 JJ Girard Volnay 1er Cru “En Chevret” for $59.99 a bottle on a 4-pack.
It borders perhaps my favorite vineyard in Volnay which is “En Cailleret” and also borders “Robardelle” which is some elite real estate. Oh it also borders “Les Santenots de Milieu.” Wow.
Stunning nose. Super aromatic, complex and spicey with a subtle herbal edge that is so so pretty. My goodness this is so pretty. Perfumed. Mashed violets and some wet earth. Huge cherry. Mid season cherry, cherry flower, and like 2% sour cherries. As it opens, raspberry and even some briary and damson aromas. Just amazing. Huge florals as well. Blackberry flowers, iris, a wisp of lilacs and even fig! Yes, fig! It’s there.
Insane sweetness on the attack followed bygreat acidity and freshness and some big tannins. This is more large scaled and structured than the Mitants. Terrific length and a sense of seriousness. Very deep and very young. This has exquisite fruit – mostly dark red cherries and black cherries. With some brief aeration in my glass we’ve got stunning rose petal aromas now. Dark red roses. Sweet late season red cherries as well. Super impressive inner mouth aromas and super explosive. Wow.
After many hours (took a sample with me) open this is stunning. 9.5 to 9.6 and and this is just brilliant and has that supernal balance that only elite wines have. Stunning fruit. Insane. So pure and so sappy. Genius.
The 2021 got a 91 from BH which is very high for him and the score is below.
“A strikingly pretty nose is once again quite cool and airy with more evident spice elements suffusing the mix of both red and blue pinot fruit. The vibrant and beautifully defined middleweight flavors are notably finer if not quite as mineral-driven on the youthfully austere and lingering finale where a touch of asperity slowly emerges. Note that my rating assumes that the asperity will slowly mitigate as the tannins progressively resolve.” -91 Points, Burghound (2020)
Midjourney
As you know, we believe that strict recitations of tasting notes is only part of the story of a wine. We’ve always tried to include metaphors to try to give our readers a better understanding of how wines impact us. These metaphors have included architecture, painting, music and poetry.
We’re trying something new to help create visual metaphors using Midjourney, a generative artificial intelligence program that is by far the best image gneratour out there. I’ve messed around with a bunch and this is by far the best. We look forward to hearing your feedback.

I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday.

A Word about Fass Selections and Social Media
I am big into certain social media and I want people to take pictures of the wines they have received or will receive and tag me in them and share their thoughts. I a am on Instagram. Please tag me there. I also am on Delectable which I love a lot. It is Iphone/Ipad only, but it’s like Instagram meets Facebook for wine. Tag me there and find me there as well. I want to know if you liked the wine, were not moved by the wine, hated the wine or the wine gave you a religious experience. I want to know it all. Feedback is key and I will answer all feedback e-mails as quickly as I can.
