The Gordian Knot That Is Piesporter Goldtröpfchen
We all know the famous story of the Gordian knot. It’s an ancient Greek legend about a knot so big that it was impossible to untie. Alexander was tasked with untying it, but instead cut it with his sword.
I love Piesporter Goldtröpfchen but there is a bit of a Gordian knot element in making dry and off dry wines from this vineyard. There is so much gorgeous fruit, it’s hard to make wines of a more elegant style. Well, in 2023, somehow Stefan Steinmetz solved this problem. His 2023 Kabinett has that amazing fruit but he made it into a wine that is so elegant, fine and tense, it’s hard to believe it’s from Piesporter Goldtröpfchen.
Is Stefan Steinmetz making the best Kabinetts in the Mosel?
What put Stefan on the radar as one of the top producers in the Mosel are his electrifying GG style wines. He makes around 10-12 a vintage.
In 2023 he made a 1927 Yankees murderer’s row of Kabinetts.
Piesporter Grafenberg
Piesporter Domherr
Piesporter Goldtröpfchen
Piesporter Treppchen
Wintricher Geierslay
Brauneberger Juffer
Wehlener Sonnenuhr
They were and are all magic and I sold them all in 2022. I cannot stop drinking Stefan’s Kabinetts and I need at least minimum a case on hand as these are just insane and absurd values. Maybe the greatest German values we sell right now.
Today, we have the mythical Piesporter Goldtropfchen.
Is Kabinett the best white wine deal in the world?
I’m going to say yes it is. For $22.99 on a case you get a stunning wine that can really do so many things.
- You can drink it on its own as a thirst quencher. Don’t grab a Coke, pop a Kabinett.
- You can long age it for 30-45 years and watch it transform into something that is so far removed from what it was when young that it’s not even recognizable but still has the Goldtropfchen DNA.
- Bring it out for Chinese/Thai and Sushi. It’s the perfect wine. Not a better wine to match. Just a fact. Cuts through the heat and accentuates all the interesting spices and flavors.
- You can short term age it and see how short term aging can affect a classical Kabinett. It will surprise you after 5-8 years and vastly improve the wine.
- Or do all of the above? It’s $22.99 on a case.
- Run and buy a case. No brainer.
Today I have second vintage of the 2023 Gunther Steimmetz Piesporter Goldtropfchen Kabinett for $24.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $22.99 on a case. And what a wine it is. The parcel he uses comes from the heart of this mythical vineyard and he really has graced all of us with just a spectacular and very special Kabinett. It has crazy acid and has a zen-like balance that is beautiful to smell and taste plus it finishes so dry and savory like a classical Kabinett should but it also has some of the famous exoticism of Goldtropfchen.
That is an absurd price for a wine of this quality.
Gorgeous nose. Nose starts out so quiet. Some light peach and minerality. Now it’s opening and we are getting some nice peach juice, vulcanized rubber, minerals and some confectionary notes. A deep honey note now and also some intense minerals. Smells round. Smells so pure and so fresh. Fully fruited. Exotic. Pineapple, melon, guava, green apple but very ripe green apple, and a massive dose of slate. Really vivid and complex. Classic Goldtropfchen. Very complex and wonderful high acid and very tense. So lean and linear and wow the precision is off the charts. But in the background is a pulverized mineral rock dust that really seems like it is a trademark of 23.
The nose leads you to believe it will be much fruitier than it is. It’s fruity, don’t get me wrong but it’s all presented on a silk string and not a thick rope.
On the palate, very elegant. Really tense and nervy. Grippy and structured and finishes with a terrific blast of fruit then a mineral wash. Exotic yet restrained and the fruit on the palate is pineapple, guava and a faint hint of mango with some blood orange and apricot. As it airs the minerality gets more intense and the fruit starts a supporting role. Really pretty. Wow great acids and freshness. Man this is awesome! Impossibly complex and so much honey, peach, lime and driving mineral force. Unreal intensity and a step above the other two Piesport Kabi’s in 2023. The finish is so, so salty and endless. This is super elite. Unreal complexity and intensity and what a finish that never ends. This also has excessive crushed rock minerality. Wow. Insane!!!
The delineation on the finish is remarkable. Now after 4 hours of air the nose is more harmonious. Peach skin. Palate is more dry and more mineral now and also has more grip. Dense and concentrated. Really sick. This is a 9.8 for me and just inched out Wehlener Sonnenuhr as the best Kabinett Stefan made in 2023.
“If you ever wondered why James Bond drank the wines from this famous Mosel vineyard site, then here is the answer. At once exotic and cool, this quickly wraps you around its little finger. Graceful and silky with the balance of delicate grape sweetness and elegant slatey acidity. Drink or hold.”

OFFICE HOURS 4-7 PM
I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday.

A Word about Fass Selections and Social Media
I am big into certain social media and I want people to take pictures of the wines they have received or will receive and tag me in them and share their thoughts. I a am on Instagram. Please tag me there. I also am on Delectable which I love a lot. It is Iphone/Ipad only, but it’s like Instagram meets Facebook for wine. Tag me there and find me there as well. I want to know if you liked the wine, were not moved by the wine, hated the wine or the wine gave you a religious experience. I want to know it all. Feedback is key and I will answer all feedback e-mails as quickly as I can.
