Is Stefan Steinmetz making the best Kabinetts in the Mosel?

What put Stefan on the radar as one of the top producers in the Mosel are his electrifying GG style wines. He makes around 10-12 a vintage but in 20, and especially 21 and 22 he made a 1927 Yankees murderer’s row of Kabinetts.

Brauneberger Juffer
Neumagner Rosengartchen
Wehlener Sonnenuhr
Piesporter Domherr
Piesporter Grafenberg
Piesporter Goldtropfchen

They were and are all magic and I sold all except Grafenberg which was brilliant in 2021 but in 2022 it was that much more brilliant. I cannot stop drinking Stefan’s Kabinetts and need at least minimum a case on hand as these are just insane and absurd values. Maybe the greatest German values we sell right now.

The mythical Piesporter Grafenberg in 22 is the beginning of a story that will be told in many many future vintages but the 22 is the first chapter as it’s the first Grafenberg from Stefan that stands out to me in its profundity. And what a wine it is. The parcel he uses comes from the heart of this mythical vineyard and he really has graced all of us with just a spectacular and very special Kabinett. It doesn’t have the acid of 21 but it’s close and has a zen-like balance that is beautiful to smell and taste plus it finishes so dry and savory like a classical Kabinett should but it also has some of the famous exoticism of Grafenberg.

It comes from red slate which is very rare in Stefan’s corner of the Mosel. Very mineral. Always great acidity. It’s just one extremely steep section underneath a high rock formation. It can be called Piesporter but also Dhroner Grafenberg but nobody calls it that.

Is Kabinett the best white wine deal in the world?
I’m going to say yes it is. For $22.99 on a case you get a stunning wine that can really do so many things.

  1. You can drink it on its own as a thirst quencher. Don’t grab a coke, pop a Kabinett.
  2. You can long age it for 30-45 years and watch it transform into something that is so far removed from what it was when young that it’s not even recognizable but still has the Grafenberg DNA.
  3. Bring it out for Chinese/Thai and Sushi. It’s the perfect wine. Not a better wine to match. Just a fact. Cuts through the heat and accentuates all the interesting spices and flavors.
  4. You can short term age it and see how short term aging can affect a classical Kabinett. It will surprise you after 5-8 years and vastly improve the wine.
  5. Or do all of the above? It’s $22.99 on a Case. Run and buy a case. No brainer.

The nose has yellow fruits and herbs. So deep and so complex, so herbal, so salty. Unreal clarity. Endless depth on the nose. Sick sick aromas. 9.8 nose. Tree bark. Dusty wood bench. Just the most incredible and detailed aromas.

On the palate, tremendously precise acidity. Highest acidity of the vintage. Gorgeous elegant structure. Still has power allied with finesse. Nose has even more extreme minerality as it opens. So concentrated, complex and super refreshing. Light yet intense and so etched. Like a Titian. Stunning. 12 grams of acid. Wow. The finish is forever and never ever stops. Balanced and so pure and so fresh. Complex. Stunning mouthfeel. Insane purity. So long. Genius wine. Balanced structure and amazing elegant green apple fruit. Wow. So silky, so mineral but refined. You get some of that red slate mineral spice. This is one of the most refined 21 Kabs from Stefan. This is insane. Concentrated and juicy. So long and pure and so explosive. Yellow fruits. Texture is amazing. Stunning wine.! Just a stunning stunning wine and another notch in Stefan’s headboard for his absurd 21 Kabinett collection. Very complex and wonderful high acid and very tense. So lean and linear and wow the precision is off the charts. Gorgeous wine. Terrific mouthfeel and sharp angles. Grippy and structured and finishes with a terrific blast of fruit then a mineral wash. Exotic yet restrained and the fruit on the palate is pineapple, guava and a faint hint of mango with some blood orange and apricot. As it airs the minerality gets more intense and the fruit starts a supporting role. Really pretty.

“A stunning Mosel riesling Kabinett with stacks of yellow peach and red vineyard peach aromas. Very exciting interplay between racy acidity and concentrated and juicy fruit on the sleek palate. Enormous wet stone minerality at the super-energetic finish. Drink or hold.”

OFFICE HOURS 4-7 PM
I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday.

A Word about Fass Selections and Social Media

I am big into certain social media and I want people to take pictures of the wines they have received or will receive and tag me in them and share their thoughts. I a am on Instagram. Please tag me there. I also am on Delectable which I love a lot. It is Iphone/Ipad only, but it’s like Instagram meets Facebook for wine. Tag me there and find me there as well. I want to know if you liked the wine, were not moved by the wine, hated the wine or the wine gave you a religious experience. I want to know it all. Feedback is key and I will answer all feedback e-mails as quickly as I can.
