The Great Winemaker Max Out Their Appellations
Ledy has a mish mosh of appellations, some of which appeal mostly to passionate Burgundy lovers. Each plot of land that has a name can be maxed out into something interesting and great. Obviously there are rankings and a hierarchy of quality in Burgundy. But as we know sometimes, in many cases, great winemakers will max out their appellations and make them so much better than they should be.

 – The old Hautes Cotes de Beaune and Hautes Cotes de Nuits from Jayer-Gilles in the 90’s.
– Michel Lafarge/Mugneret-Gibourg/Pierre Brissett Bourgogne Rouge.
– Sylvain Pataille & Joseph Roty Marsannays

All these wines bat much higher than the average for those appellations. Ledy does that with all his wines. He did get a 1er Cru Nuits St. Georges in 2013 and wisely split it into a young vines and old vines cuvee, his other appellations, Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge, Savigny Les Beaune and Chorey Les Beaune you’d think were just solid, like a .285 baseball hitter. But you’d be wrong. Every one of his wines that are from not the swanky zip codes is a .350 hitter.

Vincent is a force to be reckoned with now. His top wines today can compete with even Burgundy Grand Crus. A client emailed that he did a blind tasting with some friends of his and the 2015 Vincent Ledy Chorey Les Beaune “Les Beaumonts” was first place for 3 people over 2 different Corton Grand Crus and a Beaune 1er Cru. He emailed me about it as he could not believe it.

Ledy’s 2021s Are Finally Released
Vincent holds his wines back until he thinks that they are ready. Now his 21s are arriving and they will be easy to sell because the 20s are mostly gone and his 21s are some of the best wines he has ever made. Ledy killed this vintage. Stunning fruit purity, transparency and also amazing focus and clarity. The fruit is crisp, deep and succulent. These are some of the best values I’ll sell not only because Vincent slayed 21 but also because of the incredibly strong dollar. You do not want to miss these wines.

The Wine
Up today I have the 2021 Vincent Ledy Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits La Vacherotte” for $39.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. I tasted this as a sample in July 2023 and was floored how insane it was. We had discussed via e-mail some years back that he should split up his Haut Cote de Nuits bottlings into a young vines and an old vines cuvee as the young vines could be released earlier and the old vine cuvee can be a centerpiece wine of his non 1er Cru range. The 2018 was the first time he did it and the 18 “Jeunes Vignes” cuvee was the greatest value of Ledy I’ve ever sold. But in 21 he has separated them again and it is an astonishing wine. Today’s is not the VV but the regular version which blind I thought was the VV. This was mindblowing.

The wine is sick. Awesome. Vincent killed this wine and killed 21. Vaporized it. Big, ripe, dense sour cherry skin and macerated mid/early season cherries on the super aromatic nose. Loads of earth and stoney minerals. Huge, densely fruited nose. Wow. Smells like 1er Cru. Soupy (in a good way) and so complex. Red cherry fruits. A massive amount. Earth and soil tones. So so much in the nose. Just incredible. Floral. This is a drop dead nose. So detailed and full of fruit and character. Has a stony NSG character for sure. After air the classic sous bois notes come through. Big time.

Palate is deep and so juicy. Toothsome with sweet cherry fruit that is vibrant and sour cherry as well. Absurd. Wow, palate is dense and juicy with just beautiful pure fruit and superb balance. Fresh, inky and so pure. Not that complex but the beauty and massive amount of fruit makes up for it. Just gorgeous wine.  Amazing amplitude here on the mid palate and such refinement for the category.

Wow what a finish. Keeps expanding and expanding. Sappy and dense. This is just terrific!

It drinks like a brilliant NSG village wine. This is truly unreal. Vincent is a genius. This will unfurl and get better as it ages as all Vincent’s wines do. The concentration and purity of the fruit are astonishing. Long toothsome finish that keeps echoing fruit. Awesome. This is an insane value and should be bought by the case.

OFFICE HOURS 4-7 PM
I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday.

A Word about Fass Selections and Social Media

I am big into certain social media and I want people to take pictures of the wines they have received or will receive and tag me in them and share their thoughts. I a am on Instagram. Please tag me there. I also am on Delectable which I love a lot. It is Iphone/Ipad only, but it’s like Instagram meets Facebook for wine. Tag me there and find me there as well. I want to know if you liked the wine, were not moved by the wine, hated the wine or the wine gave you a religious experience. I want to know it all. Feedback is key and I will answer all feedback e-mails as quickly as I can.
