The 2022 Vintage
It’s time to talk about the 2022 red Burgundies of Francois Buffet. First of all Buffet has been on fire since 2019. 19/20/21 are 3 back to back back vintages in a row that can compete with any 3 back to back to back vintages from anywhere in Burgundy. But how could 22 be better? Because it was and Buffet has made another leap in quality. The 22s are astonishing wines and the best set of Cote de Beaune reds I have ever tasted. It’s like a masterclass in the Cote de Beaune from Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru “Les Narbantons” to Volnay 1er Cru “Clos des Chenes.”

The wines are sensual which is the first word that comes to mind. Each sniff and smell elicits an emotional reaction.
– They have elite aromatics that have clarity not seen before in the wines of Buffet.
– The detail is remarkable.
– The texture is about as good as it gets for the Cote de Beaune which combined with the sensual and melty tannins makes each sip that make the drinker have an emotional reaction.

It’s now one of those estates that when you take a sip and sniff all you can think and talk about is how great the wines are. From bottom to top Buffet slayed the dragon and now has to be considered at the top of the pile in the Cote de Beaune.

Equal to d’Angerville, Lafarge, Jean-Marc Bouley and Comte Armand.

Buffet has arrived and to give me a pat on the back I found them when they were not critically acclaimed and now they have other importers and are now allocated. Which brings me to the next point.

I’m pleased to offer the 2022 Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Carelle- Sous la Chapelle for $66.99 on a 4-pack is a knockout in 2021 had no choice but to sell it. The 19 was stunning but I missed it but sold the 20 which was a highlight of the vintage and It blew me away as did the just released 22. This is elite terroir and Champans is to the south west and En L’Ormeau is to the west. They are less dense than Champans but have more finesse. You can see the lighter Buffet style, the classically, silky fruit of the 2022 vintage and the lighter style and extra finesse of Carelle – Sous la Chapelle coming all together to make a standout wine.

Compare to other 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Carelle-Sous La Chapelle – $75.00 – $178.50

Always one of the most elegant 1er Crus in Volnay. Nose is a bit reticent as we start off with light cherry and some herbals plus some sweet black cherry fruit. Also some reduction which will blow off. Lovely bramble desiccated leaves and super wet earth and soil tones. The nose is gorgeous after air. Soaring. Cherry flower and sour cherries. So floral, so pretty. Such a Volnay nose. Classic nose. Haunting and ethereal. Smell it for hours on end even if it is somewhat holding back. Nose has some serious mid season cherries, elegant florals and subtle minerality. But what is there is terrific, elegant and subtle. After mega air the nose shows tree bark, crushed cherry skins, deep minerals but even after being open for 24 hours the nose is still mute which means this needs some time but palate was rocking.

What a palate. Teeming with energy and freshness. Wow great acidity here and tremendous fruit. Terrific inner mouth aromas and stunning sapidity. So elegant and structured with incredibly deep fruit. What length and seriousness! This is a 2022 that needs 1-3 years in the cellar. Amazing sweet tannins and they are so finely knit like a cashmere sweater. This is brilliant! I’ll be back as it opens. This got so complex and expansive with air. Stunning depth and purity. Really incredible complexity and a vast array of flavors. Palate is just stunning after air. Wow. Incredibly concentrated and so pure with a black cherry, late season red cherry fruit soak that is unreal. Clean, mineral and so so juicy. Balanced and so elegant with ripe and elegant tannins. Super high quality tannins and a great freshness. Long, lingering black cherry on the finish. Hit of opulence just stays in your mouth and lingers. So nimble. Just terrific fruit. Captures that 21 delicate, elegant fruit perfectly. It’s dense and elegant with just crazy energy and delineation. This is a wow wine. Huge lifting acids on the finish and wow does the finish linger. Even better on day 2. Huge perfumed mid season cherry fruit. So elegant and so precise. Lovey earth and mineral tones. Palate is ripe and juicy. Complex and velvety tannins. Sweet fruit and so intense but also serene. Awesome freshness and purity. So fine. Palate is super concentrated, balanced, pure and fresh. Just awesome fruit and density but never heavy. Such great acids and length. Amazing. Superb chewiness and structure. Has decades to go. Best one ever so far from 17-22.

“A fresher purple colour with intense red berry fruit, with a little reductive aspect on the nose, from the oak. This Carelles is clean, pure and fresh on the palate, long and quite fine. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted: October 2023.” – 90-93 – Jasper Morris

“A strikingly perfumed, cool and layered nose is comprised by notes of the essence of red currant, sandalwood and an interesting hint of orange pekoe tea. The super-sleek and silky though still quite punchy middleweight flavors possess even better refinement along with evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the focused, detailed and sneaky long finale. This is pretty much textbook Carelle.”- 91-93 Points, Burghound (2021)

OFFICE HOURS 4-7 PM
I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday
