The 2022 Vintage
It’s time to talk about the 2022 red Burgundies of Francois Buffet. First of all Buffet has been on fire since 2019. 19/20/21 are 3 back to back back vintages in a row that can compete with any 3 back to back to back vintages from anywhere in Burgundy. But how could 22 be better? Because it was and Buffet has made another leap in quality. The 22s are astonishing wines and the best set of Cote de Beaune reds I have ever tasted. It’s like a masterclass in the Cote de Beaune from Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru “Les Narbantons” to Volnay 1er Cru “Clos des Chenes.”

The wines are sensual which is the first word that comes to mind. Each sniff and smell elicits an emotional reaction.
– They have elite aromatics that have clarity not seen before in the wines of Buffet.
– The detail is remarkable.
– The texture is about as good as it gets for the Cote de Beaune which combined with the sensual and melty tannins makes each sip that make the drinker have an emotional reaction.

It’s now one of those estates that when you take a sip and sniff all you can think and talk about is how great the wines are. From bottom to top Buffet slayed the dragon and now has to be considered at the top of the pile in the Cote de Beaune.

Equal to d’Angerville, Lafarge, Jean-Marc Bouley and Comte Armand.

Buffet has arrived and to give me a pat on the back I found them when they were not critically acclaimed and now they have other importers and are now allocated. Which brings me to the next point.

The Wines
I only have 60 bottles of the Clos de Chenes and I am selling it 1:1 with the 2022 Francois Buffet Volnay AC ($47.99 a bottle on a 4-pack). So if you grab 4 Clos des Chenes you will also be getting 4 of the Volnay AC. But the 2022 Buffet Volnay AC is a 9.5 for me and one of the best village Volnays I have ever had. If not the best.

The Village Volnay costs less than most Bourgogne Rouge that comes through the 3 Tier System. It is the dictionary definition of

– World you rather have 2021 Simone Bize Bourgogne “Les Perrieres” for $50 a bottle or a case of 2022 Francois Buffet Volnay AC at $44.99.
– What about 2021 Robert Chevillon Bourgogne Rouge for $70 or Buffet’s Volnay for $44.99?

Gorgeous nose. Luscious dark black cherries and darker red cherries. Spicey and deep. Ethereal and heavenly. So deep and so enveloping. Gorgeous dusty tree bark, some soy as well. Stunning. Best village nose of any Buffet Volnay I’ve had. The fruit clarity is off the charts. Gorgeous saline aspect on the nose. Now the florals are kicking in. With air it gets so, so good. Almost dizzying. Wonderful haunting aromas of mid to late season cherries, spice, earth, tree bark, hint of sweet cherry. Some complex herbs and a wonderful hint of iodine. Love salt aromas in red wines. Classic haunting Volnay. The depth and breadth plus the clarity make this a step above all other Buffet village Volnays.

On the palate, you get superb complexity and freshness and the fruit is way redder. Amazing compact quality and so pure and balanced. Complex and so mineral. Wonderful sweetness and textures with gorgeous purity and big tannins buffered by intense minerality. This is profoundly delicious. A lithe but substantial structure. Wow the mineral/fruit combo is only something Burgundy can do at this level. What sweet, velvety tannins. A beautiful bottle of Volnay. Juicy and silky with molten tannins. This tastes like 1er cru. Amazing concentration. so deep and so pure. Very long 1er cru quality with amazing tannins and length.

This improved vastly with air, getting darker, more dark fruit driven and so sapid. brilliant! What an elegant, masterful palate. Lithe and fresh. So complex and wonderful spice. Terrific velvety tannins and tremendous spice and so so fresh. Such terrific energy and linearity. Elegant and wonderful. This as classic as village Volnay gets and gets a turbo boost of freshness in the finish as that’s what 21 is about. So fine and refined. Lovely finish and great building persistence.

You get the point. The market is inefficient and savvy Fass Selections buyers will snap up bottles of Volnay for $47.99

The 2022 Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru “Clos des Chenes” is $69.99 a bottle NET. First look at some of the prices for good to top Clos des Chenes.

– 2021 Fontaine-Gagnard Clos des Chenes – $100 – $138
– 2020 Pierrick Bouley – $120-$230

This wine is made from mostly 80 year old vines and also a small section of 12 year old vines.

This is the absolute best young Clos de Chenes I have had from anybody. It blew me away. I gave it a 9.9. It has this harmony and velvety, melted tannins that I haven’t ever encountered at Buffet. It is a true hedonistic wine but it has all the cerebral aspects of great Clos des Chenes. The texture is 10/10 no notes as are the aromas and palate. The finish is beyond long. It’s a new frontier in wine finishes.

The nose is insane. Just superbly complex with classic Clos des Chenes aromas that leap out of the glass. Huge cherry. Exotic and intense aromas with kirsch and red cherries. Just unreal aromas but also floral and stoney. Wow. Mid season cherry, cherry flower, and like 2% sour cherries. After some air, raspberry and even some briary and damson aromas. Just amazing. Huge florals as well. Iris and even fig! Yes, fig! It’s there. Just an intense perfume but also this earthy, mulchy element that I just love. It smells like it is from revered land. Elite terroir. Blackberry, spices and licorice also come through. This is so layered and complex. I mean this is old vine Clos des Chenes after all.

The palate is a stunner in that you can taste and feel the density yet remarkably, it still remains light on its feet as that is the genius of Francois Buffet. It’s so, so complex and utterly profoundly juicy with just startling purity. Big, big cherry and boysenberry fruit. So pure and crunchy. Sleek as well. Simply terrific concentration and wonderful tiny berry fruit with velvety and super refined tannins. My goodness this is just silk but it also has density and structure. It’s so unique.

The finish lasts miles and exudes grace, class and elegance. It’s at once harmonious but also grippy with those silky fine tannins.

For $70 this is insane. I’ve never ever had such a great terroir be so accessible at this young age. You can drink this young and enjoy it but it will easily last 20+ years.

“2020 Volnay “Clos des Chênes”: (from a large 1 ha holding). A more deeply pitched and more complex nose blends notes of dark raspberry and poached plum with those of newly turned earth, anise and a hint of wood. There is excellent power to the bigger, richer and more muscular medium weight plus flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the more mineral-driven and wonderfully long finale. This is worth your interest provided that at least moderate patience can be exercised.”– (91-94)/2032+ Burghound (2020)

OFFICE HOURS 4-7 PM
I love drinking and selecting wines – but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I’m happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7EST Monday – Friday.

A Word about Fass Selections and Social Media

I am big into certain social media and I want people to take pictures of the wines they have received or will receive and tag me in them and share their thoughts. I am on Instagram. Please tag me there. I also am on Delectable which I love a lot. It is Iphone/Ipad only, but it’s like Instagram meets Facebook for wine. Tag me there and find me there as well. I want to know if you liked the wine, were not moved by the wine, hated the wine or the wine gave you a religious experience. I want to know it all. Feedback is key and I will answer all feedback e-mails as quickly as I can.
